TOP STORY
New Mechanism Involved in Skin Cancer Tumor Initiation, Growth and Progression
Researchers report the mechanisms regulating the different functions of Twist1 controlling skin tumor initiation, cancer stem cell function and tumor progression. They used state of the art genetic mouse models to dissect the functional role and molecular mechanisms by which Twist1 controls tumor initiation, cancer stem cell function and tumor progression. Periostin Secreted by Glioblastoma Stem Cells Recruits M2 Tumor-Associated Macrophages and Promotes Malignant Growth
Investigators interrogated the molecular link between glioma stem cells (GSCs) and tumor-associated macrophage (TAMs) recruitment in glioblastoma multiformes and demonstrated that GSCs secrete periostin to recruit TAMs. [Nat Cell Biol] Full Article

Knockdown of Long Non-Coding RNA XIST Exerts Tumor-Suppressive Functions in Human Glioblastoma Stem Cells by Up-Regulating miR-152
Scientists elucidated the function and the possible molecular mechanisms of lncRNA XIST in human glioblastoma stem cells. Functionally, knockdown of XIST exerted tumor-suppressive functions by reducing cell proliferation, migration and invasion as well as inducing apoptosis. [Cancer Lett] Abstract

Autophagy Supports Breast Cancer Stem Cell Maintenance by Regulating IL6 Secretion
Inhibition of autophagy by knockdown of ATG7 or BECN1 modified the CD44+/CD24low/- population in breast cancer cells by regulating CD24 and IL6 secretion. Researchers reveal that autophagy regulates breast cancer stem cell maintenance in autophagy-dependent breast cancer cells by modulating IL6 secretion implicating autophagy as a potential therapeutic target in breast cancer. [Mol Cancer Res] Abstract

SOD2 Is a C-Myc Target Gene That Promotes the Migration and Invasion of Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma Involving Cancer Stem-Like Cells
Scientists clarified the mechanisms of manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD2) in the migration and invasion of tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Side population cells were used as cancer stem-like cells and assessed by sphere and colony formation assays, and the expression of stem cell markers. [Int J Biochem Cell Biol] Abstract | Graphical Abstract

Acetate Supplementation as a Means of Inducing Glioblastoma Stem-Like Cell Growth Arrest
The authors characterized the effects of glyceryl triacetate on the proliferation and differentiation of six primary glioblastoma (GBM)-derived glioma stem-like cells relative to established U87 and U251 GBM cell lines, normal human cerebral cortical astrocytes, and murine neural stem cells. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

1H NMR Spectroscopy of Glioblastoma Stem-Like Cells Identifies Alpha-Aminoadipate as a Marker of Tumor Aggressiveness
Metabolite profiles of 42 glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cells with stem-like properties lines established from the tumor tissue of adult GBM patients were screened with 1H NMR spectroscopy and compared with human neural progenitor cells from human adult olfactory bulb and from the developing human brain. [NMR Biomed] Abstract

Inhibitory Action of Pristimerin on Hypoxia-Mediated Metastasis Involves Stem Cell Characteristics and EMT in PC-3 Prostate Cancer Cells
The authors investigated whether pristimerin affects the bone metastasis, stem cell characteristics and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of prostate cancer PC-3 cells subjected to hypoxia. [Oncol Rep] Abstract

A Flexible Reporter System for Direct Observation and Isolation of Cancer Stem Cells
Investigators developed a flexible lentiviral-based reporter system that allows direct visualization of cancer stem cells based on functional properties. [Stem Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract
