Glioblastomas Are Composed of Genetically Divergent Clones with Distinct Tumorigenic Potential and Variable Stem Cell-Associated Phenotypes
While clonal heterogeneity could be recapitulated in spheroid-based xenografts, the authors found that genetically distinct clones displayed different tumorigenic potential. Moreover, they showed that putative cancer stem cell markers including CD133, CD15, A2B5 and CD44 were present on genetically distinct tumor cell populations. [Acta Neuropathol] Full Article

Inhibition of CXCL12/CXCR4 Autocrine/Paracrine Loop Reduces Viability of Human Glioblastoma Stem-Like Cells Affecting Self-Renewal Activity
Researchers demonstrate that cancer stem cells, isolated from five human glioblastomas (GBMs), express CXCR4 and release CXCL12 in vitro, although different levels of expression and secretion were observed in individual cultures, as expected for the heterogeneity of GBMs. [Toxicology] Abstract

Aldehyde Dehydrogenase and ATP Binding Cassette Transporter G2 (ABCG2) Functional Assays Isolate Different Populations of Prostate Stem Cells Where ABCG2 Function Selects for Cells with Increased Stem Cell Activity
To test for stem cell characteristics of self-renewal and multipotency, cells with high and low aldehyde dehydrogenase1A1 activity, based on the ALDEFLUORTM assay, were isolated from prostate clinical specimens and were recombined with rat urogenital sinus mesenchyme to induce prostate gland formation. Leptin Enhances the Invasive Ability of Glioma Stem-Like Cells Depending on Leptin Receptor Expression
The authors explored the role of leptin during glioma stem-like cells invasion as well as the signaling pathway. They found that glioma stem-like cells exhibited high invasive potential, especially in the presence of leptin, Ob-R coexpressed with CD133 in glioma stem-like cells was showed to be responsible for leptin mediated invasion of glioma stem-like cells. Evaluation of the Expression of Stem Cell Markers in Human Breast Cancer Reveals a Correlation with Clinical Progression and Metastatic Disease in Ductal Carcinoma
Investigators examined the distribution and expression of a panel of stem cell markers in human breast cancer primary tumors. Human breast tissues were processed for immunohistochemistry, and RNA was extracted for analysis by quantitative-PCR. Immunohistochemical assay revealed that CD44 was strongly expressed in background endothelia and epithelia. [Oncol Rep] Abstract

Embryonic Stem Cell-Specific Signature in Cervical Cancer
The authors focused in an expression signature that is specific to embryonic stem cells and to poorly differentiated cervical malignant tumors and they hypothesize that this expression signature may play an important role to promote cell growth, survival, colony formation, lack of adhesion, as well as cell invasion and migration in cervical cancer.
