TOP STORY
Blood Vessel Cells Coax Colorectal Cancer Cells into More Dangerous State
Working in human colorectal cancer cell lines and tumor samples, as well as mouse models, researchers found that endothelial cells can trigger changes in cancer cells without even coming into direct contact with them. This signaling by the endothelial cells causes colorectal cancer cells to take on the attributes of cancer stem cells. Circulating Breast Tumor Cells Exhibit Dynamic Changes in Epithelial and Mesenchymal Composition
Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of adherent epithelial cells to a migratory mesenchymal state has been implicated in tumor metastasis in preclinical models. To investigate its role in human cancer, researchers characterized EMT in circulating tumor cells from breast cancer patients. [Science]

Expression of Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 by Hepatocellular Carcinoma Stem Cells and Circulating Tumor Cells
Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM1) is believed to be involved in metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. Researchers investigated whether ICAM1 is a marker of HCC stem cells. [Gastroenterology] Abstract

miR-7 Suppresses Brain Metastasis of Breast Cancer Stem-Like Cells by Modulating KLF4
Scientists found that cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) (CD24/CD44+/ESA+) isolated from metastatic breast cell lines are significantly more metastatic than non-CSC populations in an organ-specific manner. [Cancer Res] Abstract | Press Release

A CD90+ Tumor-Initiating Cell Population with an Aggressive Signature and Metastatic Capacity in Esophageal Cancer
Researchers report a CD90+ cell population found in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma which is endowed with stem cell-like properties and high tumorigenic and metastatic potential. [Cancer Res] Abstract

Lmo2 Induces Hematopoietic Stem Cell Like Features in T-Cell Progenitor Cells Prior to Leukemia
LIM domain Only 2 (Lmo2) is frequently deregulated in sporadic and gene therapy-induced acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia where its overexpression is an important initiating mutational event. Researchers analyzed proliferation, differentiation, and cell death in CD2-Lmo2 transgenic thymic progenitor cells to understand the cellular effects of enforced Lmo2 expression. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Resistance to DNA-Damaging Treatment in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Tumor-Initiating Cells Involves Reduced DNA-PK/ATM Activation and Diminished Cell Cycle Arrest
Increasing evidence suggests that tumor-initiating cells, also called cancer stem cells, are partly responsible for resistance to DNA-damaging treatment. Researchers addressed if such a phenotype may contribute to radio- and cisplatin resistance in non-small cell lung cancer. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor-α/Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1α Interplay Sustains Carbonic Anhydrase IX and Apoliprotein E Expression in Breast Cancer Stem Cells
Investigators report on the relationship between nuclear receptors activity and the modulation of the pro-inflammatory phenotype in breast cancer stem cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

Evaluation of Characteristics of CD44+CD117+ Ovarian Cancer Stem Cells in Three Dimensional Basement Membrane Extract Scaffold versus Two Dimensional Monocultures
The authors demonstrated that human epithelial ovarian cancer CD44+CD117+ cells possessed the properties of cancer stem cells that exhibited more chemoresistance in the three-dimensional culture than that of in two-dimensional one. [BMC Cell Biol] Full Article

REVIEWS
Nanotheranostics of Circulating Tumor Cells, Infections and Other Pathological Features In Vivo
This article reviews novel therapeutic and diagnostic (theranostic) platforms integrating in vivo real-time early diagnosis of circulating tumor cells, circulating endothelial cells, circulating bacterial cells and other abnormal objects in circulation. This critical review particularly focuses on nanotechnology-based theranostic (nanotheranostic) approaches, especially in vivo photoacoustic and photothermal nanotheranostic platforms. [Mol Pharm] Abstract
